Composer Edvard Grieg is an icon of Norwegian music after leaving his home in Bergen, Norway; he went and studied at the conservatory in Leipzig. Under the patronage of Ignaz Moscheles (piano) and Carl Reinecke (composition), he started his formal education in music. His debut work String Quartet in D minor was performed in Karlshamn, Sweden Grieg being a young composer in school he witnessed this. . In 1862, Grieg graduated from the conservatory, although he had been diagnosed with a form of tuberculosis that left him with only one functioning lung. With Bjötjerne Björnson, playwright and poet, as his partner he staged performances of such works as Before a Southern Convert, and Bergliot.Grieg after admiring the literature works of his generation. Grieg developed a friendship with Henrik Ibsen While Björnson was struggling with his productivity. Grieg supplied incidental music to Ibsen's Peer Gynt through this new collaboration that was very important for both. Grieg's scored Peer Gynt into Suite 1 in 1888 and Suite 2 in 1893 as the premiere had a great response from the critics. (1888 and 1893 respectively).
Grieg travelled a lot after his success and met many famous international composers including Brahms, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and others. Grieg was able to make most of his money by sticking to a strong schedule of concert tours and in 1874 he was also awarded a grant. From 1880 to 1882, for a short period he was worked as a music director for Bergen Symphony Orchestra and also worked as same at the Bergen Harmonien. After Grieg and his wife relocated to his Norwegian hometown of Bergen in 1885, he built there his famous house Troldhaugen. The house is even today a famous destination for the tourists. It also has a secondary building the overlooks the water and this is where the composer used to work in isolation. Each fall for European tours that would last the rest of the year, the couple left Norway after the summer. He also performed throughout his homeland, Norway.
Grieg lived at a rate that would ultimately catch up with him and everywhere he traveled, he was respected. After prolonged health problems, Grieg passed away in Bergen due to chronic fatigue.
Devoting his entire livelihood in the quest of a national sound, Grieg was most celebrated composer of Norway. His honesty towards his objective can be seen through the way he respected his predecessors. The determination to “Create a national form of music, which could give the Norwegian people an identity”, he wrote in the Romantic tradition.
