Ernest Bloch had an exemplary Swiss father who was a well known watch and clock producer. Ernest was educated with miscellaneous musical teachings, had complex violin instructions and from Emile Jacques Dalcroze he learnt eurhythmics [Music with movement]. His wide travel includes Munich, Paris, Switzerland and Belgium. The famous German Philosopher with similar name Ernst Bloch [1885-1977] who also took interest in music was not his relative. Fruitful works of Bloch in his student life remained un published. Ernest Bloch was a great songster, did not establish any new style in new music, but whose distinguishing accented speech and ethnic music attracted public manipulation with 12 note system and stylish one fourth tones. He had unique interest in the modern literary world of the century and his music was a stimulant to both youngsters and academicians then. His daughter Suzanne born after his marriage with Magarethe Schneider in 1904 grew up to become a famous lute [stringed musical instrument] player. Though his music was drawing attention of people, yet Macbeth, the opera dramatized in Paris was witnessed by vacuous spectators in 1910.

He was part of the Maud Allan dance company as conductor in 1916 and voyaged to the U.S where the company became insolvent, so he had to stay back in America. He did well as conductor, composer, teacher, administrator in the music school and became an American national in 1924. In 1925 he was the director of Sanfransisco Conservatory. There after he went with his marathon Rhapsody concerto America which earned him the first Prize in the Musical America funded contest. Later in 1930 he went back to Switzerland and toured extensively in Europe and performed many concerts. However before the onset of World War II with the mounting Nazi’s in Germany, he was impelled to hold on to his American nationality by returning to the picturesque Agate Beach and the University of California employed him as the professor in Berkeley for summer course schooling. He stopped working in 1952 and died of cancer in 1959. Sessions, Antheil and Kirchner were among some of the triumphant pupils who were taught by Bloch during his two teaching tenures.
