Background:

Frank Bridge was a recipient of a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he inculcated violin and learnt to compose. His colleague was Charles Villiers Stanford for four years between 1899 and 1903. He acquired his graduation in the year 1904. He accompanied Joachim
Quartet in the year 1906. Till 1915 he was an associate of the English String Quartet. He directed some operas at Convent Garden and Savoy Theatre. In 1906 Sir Thomas Beecham structured his New Symphony Orchestra and made Bridge his subordinate. Sir Henry Wood was an associate and a great supporter of Bridge and he allowed Bridge to direct sporadically at Queen’s Hall. The Sea (1911) was the first collection of his composition and he was influenced by the French style. He composed many songs and chamber music. He was well recognized as an exceptional violinist and a music director. The Cello concerto in D minor (1913-1917) and the foursome songs No.2 in G minor (1915) was in discord and gloomy. This was due to the distressing time of the first World War which affected the emotional balance of this peace lover. There was a long gap before he composed ‘The Piano sonata (1921-1924)’.
