Was it a Dream I Loved is a new evening length performance piece directed by Sonsheree Giles in collaboration with composer Caroline Penwarden and visual artist Heike Liss. Synthesizing art history and the quotidian, they use original choreography, musical compositions, video enhanced environments and sculptural installations to weave together a unique and magical landscape.
These three female artists share an interest in immersive dance theatre works, and in collaborations that intersect and overlap the artistic mediums. Together they push boundaries by asking questions: What is dance? What is music? What is connection? What is beauty? What is reality? What is truth?
Was it a Dream I Loved is informed by the seminal ballet Afternoon of a Faun originally choreographed by Nijinsky. The three artists investigate the decadence and eroticism of the original ballet, shifting focus through different gender roles, anthropomorphism, character dynamics and emotions, creating an alternate world that blurs fantasy and reality. show less
