DSG Studios, originally The Dancers’ Synectics Group, was founded in 1971 by Ann Marie Garvin after the birth of her son. The mission was to teach aspiring dancers who wished to work commercially, train in a number of styles, and prepare to be triple threat performers, ready to work and in demand.
The Dancers’ Synectics Group’s list of “graduates” is testimony to the fact that this approach worked and that a well trained dancer can pick and choose his or her venue. Former students are now performers teachers choreographers and directors.
In 1981, Ms. Garvin produced directed and choreographed “Dance between the Lines”, an award winning cabaret revue that still holds the record for the longest running dance show in San Francisco. (4 -1/2 years)
The studios are now used independently by a series of teachers looking for space that allows them to reap the financial rewards of their efforts. There is no percentage taken by the studios, and each teacher pays only a flat hourly rental fee. With a following, teachers can thrive, and reap the rewards of their efforts both financially and creatively.
